Report: Texas to consider Cristobal, Franklin if no Urban Meyer – 247Sports

Ever since Texas’ collapse last week at home to Iowa State, Tom Herman has been under the microscope. The Longhorns are virtually eliminated from Big 12 title contention, and talk around the program making a change at head coach is heating up by the day. It goes without saying that Urban Meyer is Texas’ top choice. However, should Meyer choose not to leave his job as an analyst at FOX, who could Texas go to should it still decide to make a change? According to CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd, Penn State’s James Franklin and Oregon’s Mario Cristobal would be next in line. Franklin was mentioned as a name at USC plenty of times last season when the speculation around Clay Helton’s job security grew. He’s turned Penn State into one of the best programs in the sport, going 57-28 overall and 35-23 in t...

California Assemblyman James Gallagher slams Democratic Gov. Newsom’s new COVID-19 lockdown – Fox News

A California assemblyman is warning that businesses and school-aged children could suffer under Gov. Gavin Newsom’s latest coronavirus restrictions. “Every state is experiencing a surge, which begs the question, how do these shutdowns actually reduce cases?” Republican Assemblyman James Gallagher told Fox News on Friday. Newsom announced new restrictions as the state suffers from a surge in coronavirus cases. If a region’s available intensive care unit capacity drops to below 15%, the rules would shut down businesses and activities there for at least three weeks. California had a record 20,759 new cases on Dec. 2, and COVID-19-related hospitalizations rose by 33% in the past week. NEWSOM ORDERS MORE LOCKDOWNS, BUT DEM’S WIFE SAYS THEY’RE HURTING KIDS “If we don’t act now our ho...

Some Trump supporters in this Georgia county say the election system is ‘rigged.’ That could hurt Republicans in January – CNN

Tallapoosa, Georgia (CNN)Sixty miles west of Atlanta, Haralson County sits a world away from Georgia‘s largest and booming metro area. Here, in the small towns that sit in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains, Republican roots run generations deep. In November, the county voted for Donald Trump over Joe Biden, 87% to 13% — making it one of the most Republican-leaning areas in the state. In the heart of the half-mile downtown of Tallapoosa, diners waited outside two food trucks and chatted about the upcoming January 5 Senate runoffs. But the conversation about next month’s election began with November’s results. “I honestly think Trump did,” said Ralph Horton, when asked who he thinks won the election, despite no legitimate evidence to support that ...

Trump orders most U.S. troops out of Somalia – NBC News

President Trump has ordered the withdrawal of most of the U.S. troops stationed in Somalia, Pentagon officials said Friday. The nearly 800 troops represent a small footprint but are seen as a crucial bulwark against African-based extremist groups, including al-Shabab. In a statement, the Pentagon said the U.S. is not “withdrawing or disengaging from Africa.” “While a change in force posture, this action is not a change in U.S. policy,” the Pentagon said in a statement. “We will continue to degrade violent extremist organizations that could threaten our homeland while ensuring we maintain our strategic advantage in great power competition.” Seen through a night-vision device, U.S. Army Spc. Dominic Deitrick, assigned to the 1-186th Infantry Battalion, Task Force Guardian, Combined Joi...

Alaska islands may be part of single, massive volcano – National Geographic

A trail of volcanic islands off the coast of southern Alaska may actually be part of a single giant caldera, according to evidence being presented next week at the American Geophysical Union’s fall meeting. If so, it’s possible the newly revealed volcanic giant once erupted in a blast large enough to dwarf the cataclysmic 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. The behemoth in question is marked by a semi-circular cluster of peaks in the Aleutian Islands known as the Islands of the Four Mountains (IFM). Long thought to be independent volcanoes, the six peaks—including Herbert, Carlisle, Cleveland, Tana, Uliaga, and Kagamil—may actually be a series of connected vents along the edge of a much larger volcanic caldera. Even if the idea is confirmed, though, the results don’t necessarily foretell of...

Gavin Newsom’s stay-at-home order — before California requires them to tighten restrictions. The counties have nearly 6 million people in a region that includes the nation’s tech capital. Bay Area leaders have been among the most aggressive in the nation in shutting down activities, and they moved possibly weeks before being required to under Newsom’s new system. Coronavirus: Ohio to follow new CDC quarantine guidelines – Hamilton Journal News

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers new guidelines that call for fewer days in quarantine for those who may have been exposed but are not showing symptoms. Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff, the Ohio Department of Health’s chief medical officer, discussed the CDC’s new guidelines Friday afternoon during Gov. Mike DeWine’s video news conference. ExploreCoronavirus vaccine: When, who and how many will Ohio receive? The new guidance calls for a 10-day quarantine if the exposure did not require testing and there are no symptoms, and a seven-day quarantine if COVID-19 test results are negative and there are no symptoms. The 10-day period may be sufficient, however, Vanderhoff recommends that Ohioans consider getting tested on day eight or later to increase certainty of no infection. Quaran...
