Cape Verde court rejects Maduro envoy's appeal against US extradition

(Reuters) – A court in Cape Verde has rejected an appeal from a detained Colombian businessman seeking to avoid extradition to the United States on money laundering charges, his defense team said on Tuesday. Alex Saab, who has been working on behalf of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, was arrested in June when a plane he was traveling on landed in the West African island nation. Maduro’s government said Saab was traveling as a state “agent” on business to obtain humanitarian supplies to help combat the coronavirus pandemic. The United States last year charged Saab in connection with a bribery scheme to take advantage of Venezuela’s state-controlled exchange rate. It also sanctioned him for allegedly orchestrating a corruption network that allowed him and M...

Kobach Would Do Anything for Trump. But He Won’t Do That

The Washington Post/Getty Kris Kobach needs Donald Trump—but his loyalty has limits.  As the president has continued to escalate his attacks on mail-in voting during the coronavirus pandemic, Kobach, the former Kansas Secretary of State and early ally of the president, has appeared on television and even written a column supporting Trump’s broad targeting of the practice as others try to make the measure more widespread during the health crisis.  But in his home state of Kansas, where voting by mail will play a key role in deciding the contentious Republican Senate primary that Kobach currently finds himself in, the GOP lightning rod has avoided leveling similar attacks. Mostly because Kobach’s career is tightly intertwined with the state’s process.  “The mail-in systems of most states are...

Will Tlaib take her primary? Who will win the Kansas GOP Senate race? What to watch for Tuesday's election

WASHINGTON – In her first year as a congresswoman, Rashida Tlaib has garnered national attention as an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump and member of the “Squad,” a group of progressive congresswomen elected in 2018. But now Tlaib, who narrowly won the primary race to represent Michigan’s 13th congressional district, is locked into a tight primary race against Brenda Jones, the Detroit City Council president.  Tlaib during the 2018 midterms won the six-way primary race by less than 1,000 votes, with Jones finishing a close second.  Now the two are going up against each other once more after Jones entered the primary race in late March. Jones, however, has trailed in fundraising. She also announced in early April that she had tested positive for COVID-19. But she’s remained ...

Saab was arrested in June when his private jet stopped to refuel in the former Portuguese colony on the way to Iran. Saab was waiting for the court to schedule a hearing at which he could argue against extradition, according to the statement sent by the legal team, which is led by former Spanish judge Baltasar Garzon. The legal team described the...
