Nasa spacecraft hears ‘hum’ outside our solar system – The Independent

A Nasa spacecraft is picking up a strange “hum” outside of our solar system. Voyager 1 is the most distant human-made object ever, as one of a pair of spacecraft launched towards the edge of the solar system, 44 years ago. Its journey has taken it right to the edge and beyond it – and it is now fying through the “interstellar medium” beyond our own Sun’s influence. Instruments on board the spacecraft that attempt to analyse that interstellar medium have heard a constant drone, which appears to be the noise of the universe beyond our own neighbourhood. The drone appears to be emitted by interstellar gas or plasma waves that are out in the largely empty space between the stars. “It’s very faint and monotone, because it is in a narrow frequency bandwidth,” said Stella Koch Ocker, a Cornell do...

How Liz Cheney lost Republican support ahead of Stefanik vote this week – Fox News

‘Democrats are destroying this nation’: Rep. McCarthy House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy points to ‘the largest missed jobs report’ in more than two decades, the ‘destruction of our energy’ and the migrant surge at the southern border as reasons for why he believes the Democrats are hurting America. Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., will likely become the highest-ranking female Republican in American government by midday Wednesday. It’s all but a fait accompli that the House GOPers will bounce House Republican Conference Chairwoman Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., from her post and install Stefanik. But the fight over Stefanik or Cheney frankly has very little to do with either of them. This is a vote about former President Trump and his continued domination of th...

An NYPD officer sprinted through Times Square to get a 4-year-old shooting victim to safety – CNN

(CNN)A New York police officer sprang into action when a shooting erupted in Times Square over the weekend, wounding two women and a 4-year-old girl. NYPD Officer Alyssa Vogel — a new mother herself — was filmed bolting through the busy tourist thoroughfare on Saturday with the injured child in her arms. The girl had been shot in the leg, and Vogel was moving as fast as she could to get the child to an ambulance. In a Monday appearance on CNN’s “New Day,” Vogel said she heard reports of shots fired on 45th Street and Broadway and found two of her colleagues treating two women who’d been shot. They told Vogel a “baby up the block” had been shot, too. Vogel told CNN’s Brianna Keilar that she and her partner took off running. Another offic...

Gal Gadot confirms Joss Whedon ‘threatened’ her career during ‘Justice League’ reshoots – Fox News

Don’t mess with Wonder Woman. Actress Gal Gadot said she “took care of it” when “Justice League” director Joss Whedon became nasty with her during filming of the 2017 movie, according to remarks she made Saturday to Israeli outlet N12. Whedon has been under fire for months after several actors on his projects, including “Justice League,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel” accused the once red-hot director of being abusive and creating “toxic” working environments. “He kind of threatened my career and said if I did something, he would make my career miserable and I just took care of it instead,” Gadot said during the Saturday interview. JOSS WHEDON AND GAL GADOT CLASHED ON ‘JUSTICE LEAGUE’ SE...

Seth Rogen Doesn’t Plan on Working With James Franco Following Sexual Misconduct Allegations – The Cut

Photo: Randy Holmes via Getty Images When asked in a new Sunday Times interview about working with friend and former frequent collaborator James Franco in the years since numerous sexual misconduct allegations were leveled against the actor, Rogen says, “The truth is that I have not, and I do not plan to right now.” When asked if he believed the accusations against his Pineapple Express co-star, Rogen replied, “What I can say is that I despise abuse and harassment, and I would never cover or conceal the actions of someone doing it, or knowingly put someone in a situation where they were around someone like that.” In January 2018, five women publicly accused Franco of sexual misconduct, including sexual coercion and exploitation, which the actor denied through his lawyers. Two women, Sarah ...

Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem Turned Into a War Zone, Videos Show – The Daily Beast

The third-holiest site in Islam—the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem—was turned into a chaotic battlefield Monday as Israeli police responded violently to Palestinian protesters, injuring more than 300 people. In recent days, Jerusalem has been suffering its worst violence for years, sparked by incendiary plans to evict dozens of Palestinians from an Arab area in the east of the city and hand their homes to Israelis. The crisis worsened Monday ahead of the nationalist Jerusalem Day Flag March, which marks Israel’s capture of East Jerusalem in the 1960s. According to the Associated Press, more than 305 Palestinians were injured in Monday’s violence alone, including over 200 who have been hospitalized, and nine people who have been left in a serious condition. Twenty-one Israeli police are report...

Michelle Obama says people around her family need to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 – CBS News

Michelle Obama is speaking out about the need for Americans to be vaccinated against the coronavirus. Speaking with “CBS This Morning” co-host Gayle King, the former first lady discussed the pandemic’s impact on mental health along with other issues facing the United States, including work that still needs to be done to end systemic racism in the wake of fired officer Derek Chauvin’s guilty verdict. During the second episode of her podcast, Obama revealed in August 2020 that she was suffering from low-grade depression over the pandemic, racial issues that were coming to a head that summer and the Trump administration’s effect through it all.  Obama told King she felt it was important to “say it out loud.” “To not feel depressed, you know, wit...

Reversing Trump, US restores transgender health protections – The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. will protect gay and transgender people against sex discrimination in health care, the Biden administration announced Monday, reversing a Trump-era policy that sought to narrow the scope of legal rights in sensitive situations involving medical care. The action by the Department of Health and Human Services affirms that federal laws forbidding sex discrimination in health care also protect gay and transgender people. The Trump administration had defined “sex” to mean gender assigned at birth, thereby excluding transgender people from the law’s umbrella of protection. “Fear of discrimination can lead individuals to forgo care, which can have serious negative health consequences,” said HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra. “Everyone — including LGBTQ people — should be abl...
